When I was picking out a name for my company, I wanted something to resonate with the way that food USED to be. When I was growing up, I remember riding my bicycle through our neighborhood in the suburbs of Washington state. There were plenty of green spaces where wild blackberries grew; and if you were lucky or knew where to look, salmonberries. I can still recall the sweetness from those plump berries and my fingers being stained from their juices. We had apple trees in our backyard and we could pluck them, with their fragrant subtle scent, and stretch out on the grass where we would alternate between searching for that elusive four-leaf clover, identifying shapes in the clouds, or rolling down the hill. From those wonderful memories, Green Grass Foods, Inc. was born.
How times have changed. Between seeing the industrial evolution in our food systems, GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms for our Jimmy Fallon fans), partially hydrogenated oils which we know are a a source of transfats (coffee creamers are a common source), to rBST in our dairy cows, and the levels of pesticides that are measured in the "Dirty Dozen" of produce (from Environmental Working Group), I was becoming increasingly concerned about the direction we were headed. As a nation, we are good at creating more efficient systems of growing and producing food but at what cost to our environment, the animals, and our own bodies? I wanted to change that and sometimes you have to jump in to be part of the answer.
I started Green Grass Foods with our flagship brand, nutpods because I wanted to bring to market a wholesome, delicious tasting option that was lacking in the marketplace so consumers can create a perfect cup of coffee without compromise. I've heard from many of you that there ARE other options out there, but for various reasons, they don't work for you. It's too sweet. It's too thin. It's not creamy enough. But as you can see from our company brand, the door is open for us to make an impact in other areas of the food industry. And beyond our product, we really have an opportunity as a company to make a difference with corporate stewardship programs and establishing a portfolio of partners and causes we support such as 1% for the Planet and Water.org. Sometimes you have to be the change that you want to see.
